William Hoy papers, 1935-1949.

Contains correspondence from researchers and fellow historians, particularly concerning Chinese American local history and San Francisco's Chinatown, including letters from Louis Adamic, Carl Glick, Idwal Jones, and Carey McWilliams. Includes working drafts, research notes, and clippings from Hoy's writings, including numerous articles about Chinatown and its people, places, organizations, buildings, newspapers, and history, as well as the Chinese in Calif. and the U.S. Of note is Hoy's work on the Sun Yat Sen memorial by sculptor Benny Bufano, and a proposal and draft for a history of the Chinese Six Companies. Also includes a radioscript from Tales of the California Chinese, written for "The Chinese Hour" on KSAN.

Beniamino Bufano, a sculptor, was born in San Fele, Italy in 1886, and the fourteenth of fifteen children. He immigrated to New York with his family when he was a boy. As an adult he lived all over the world, but mostly in San Francisco. He married in 1925 to Virginia Bufano Lewin. They had one son Erskine. Virginia and Bufano divorced in 1932. Carey McWilliams was born December 13, 1905 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He completed his Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1927. Idwal Jones was born in 1890 in northern Wales. In 1902 his family moved to Pennsylvania. He began his career in journalism in 1915, writing for newspapers in San Francisco. In 1926 he published his first novel. He was an accomplished chef and was active in various food and wine societies.
